Crystallization of Coccolith Calcite at Different Life‐Cycle Phases Exhibits Distinct Degrees of Cellular Confinement

چکیده
Coccolithophores are a group of unicellular marine algae that shape global geochemical cycles via the production calcium carbonate crystals. Interestingly, different life-cycle phases same coccolithophore species produce very calcitic scales, called coccoliths. In widely studied diploid phase, crystals have anisotropic and complex morphologies, while haploid cells coccoliths consisting solely calcite with simple rhombohedral morphology. Understanding how these two control crystallization is highly sought-after goal, yet, phase has rarely been studied, process by which they form unknown. Herein, advanced electron microscopy employed to elucidate cellular architecture calcification in cells. The results show contrast diploid-phase calcification, coccolith-forming vesicle haploid-phase voluminous. this solution-like environment, nucleate grow asynchronously resembles growth bulk solution, leading morphologies distinct mineralization regimes suggest architecture, specifically confinement process, pivotal determinant biomineral morphology assembly.

the present study sought to investigate the role of dynamic assessment (da) in improvement of iranian efl writing performance at different language proficiency levels. to this end, after conducting the quick placement test, 60 iranian efl learners were assigned to two groups with different language proficiency levels. in both groups each participant wrote two compositions, one before and one af...
The origin of carbon isotope vital effects in coccolith calcite
Calcite microfossils are widely used to study climate and oceanography in Earth's geological past. Coccoliths, readily preserved calcite plates produced by a group of single-celled surface-ocean dwelling algae called coccolithophores, have formed a significant fraction of marine sediments since the Late Triassic. However, unlike the shells of foraminifera, their zooplankton counterparts, coccol...
متن کاملGrowth of Calcite in Confinement
Slow growth of calcite in confinement is abundant in Nature and man made materials. There is ample evidence that such confined growth may create forces that fracture solids. The thermodynamic limits are well known but since confined crystal growth is transport limited and difficult to control in experiment we have almost no information on the mechanisms or limits of these processes. We present ...
متن کاملCrystallization in diblock copolymer thin films at different degrees of supercooling.
The crystalline structures in thin films of polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) diblock copolymers were studied in dependence on the degree of supercooling. Atomic force microscopy showed that the crystalline domains (lamellae) consist of grains, which are macroscopic at low and intermediate degrees of supercooling, but of submicrometer size for strong supercooling. Using grazing-inci...
متن کاملInhibition by glycosaminoglycans of CaCO3 (calcite) crystallization.
Of a range of glycosaminoglycans, heparin and heparan sulphate were the most effective inhibitors in vitro of CaCO3 (calcite) crystallization as assayed by conductimetric measurements. The possible role of such glycosaminoglycans in modulating calcium-salt crystallizations in vivo is discussed.
